Language learning tips can be too "linguistics-y" sometimes. Here are three things you can do TODAY to boost your language learning progress.
1. Use what you know.
👉 Put your phone or computer into your learning language. Every time you pick up your phone or send an email, you'll be incorporating your language into your everyday moments and tasks.
Incorporate what you already know into your everyday routines as much as possible.
🔑Recalling information when prompted versus having that information come to mind naturally when you need it in a real-world moment are two different things! Using what you already know as much as possible throughout your day will help that mind-moment connection get stronger as you go.
2. Focus on "meaningful input."
👉 Love listening to music in your learning language? Great! Try focusing on a new song every few weeks in addition to growing your playlist. Pick a few songs you love and learn the lyrics so you can sing along rather than just have it playing in the background. Your second (or third, or fourth) language won't come to the front of your mind if it always stays in the background.
🔑"Input" is any language content you actively work to understand and reformulate in your own words to use naturally later on. Consuming language content without trying to understand it slows you down and overwhelms your brain. It ends up creating the illusion that you're working on your new language when you're not engaging with it.
3. Stuck on pronunciation?
👉 Record yourself speaking, play it back, and compare it with either a native speaker (if you know one) or an AI tool to refine your pronunciation. Then, practice, practice, practice!
🔑Building pronunciation is a mix of muscle memory, vocabulary familiarity, noticing where you need to tweak things, practice, and time. Don't get discouraged if you struggle at first. Success and confidence comes with consistency!
